1682 - The Lady Betty Hastings of Ledston Hall
Lady Betty Hastings was born at Ledston Hall in 1682 and was the daughter of the 7th. Earl of Huntingdon. An article by Sir Richard Steel in 'The Tatler' of 1709 refers to her as "A pattern to all who love things praiseworthy; an exact economist without appearing busy; the most strictly virtuous without tasting the praise of it; and shuns applause with as much industry as others do reproach." By a Codicil of her Will she "Gave and devised all her Manors, Lands and Hereditaments in Wheldale, Castleford, otherwise called Queldale, to Queens College, Oxford, towards the maintenance of five poor scholars."
