1927 - The Market Fire
On the very last day of 1927 Castleford Market Hall burst into flames and was destroyed. The Pontefract and Castleford Express gave the following report:
Public Market Hall Gutted
Over One Hundred Businesses Involved.
A disaster of the first magnitude befell Castleford on New Years Eve, when the most disastrous fire the town has ever experienced broke out in the Public Market Hall. The fire raged during the early hours of the morning and it resulted in the complete destruction of the building and heavy losses to the tenants.
Although it was claimed that the Market Hall and some of its tenants were under-insured Castleford Council realised its value to the town and agreed immediately to replace it. The new Market Hall was opened in August 1929.
